Dog and Gun Inn promotes community ties by using local Yorkshire businesses...

Most of our suppliers are local to Yorkshire. From the eggs we use to our light bulbs to the fresh flowers on the bar - they're all supplied by companies within a stone's throw of our pub.

We pride ourselves on our community ties and what better way to support the local Yorkshire economy than to source all our produce and business services locally. Working with our suppliers and using local, seasonal foods is how our menu has evolved to be so varied, so tasty and such good value for money with a traditional flavour of Yorkshire - talking of which, have you tried Havercakes?

Havercakes are oatmeal bread cakes which were once the staple food of Yorkshire Pennine towns. The Duke of Wellington's Regiment used to recruit here and when out seeking 'volunteers' the recruiting sergeant would put a havercake on his bayonet to signify that they'd be well fed. Timothy Taylor even produced a Havercake Ale to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Duke of Wellington's Regiment who are also known as 'The Havercakes'.

We put Havercakes on the menu when the ale was launched and they have been there ever since. We buy them from the only place in the UK where they're made; Asa Nicholson in Denholme. We serve them as starters filled with ham, mushroom, cheese or seafood and as a pudding filled with Bramley Apple, sultanas and spices. Delicious!
